Intrinsic factors of Bunions

Foot & ankle specialists

For the disease to develop, a basic structural disorder must exist.

Flat foot: advanced position of the first toe and its metatarsal. An excessively long big toe is the most common cause of bunions. Most bunions are associated with Egyptian-type feet, and are extremely rare in Greek-type feet. The first long toe inside a shoe is compressed, deviating, which creates a vicious circle that leads to the beginning and subsequent development of Bunions.

Metatarsus primus varus: this term refers to the separation and internal rotation of the metatarsal, considering it as the fundamental cause of Bunions.

Muscular imbalance: it is a clear origin in the cases of Bunions in paralytics, but in common Bunions the muscular imbalance is considered more a consequence than the cause of the disease. Once established, tight muscles and displaced tendons can aggravate malpositioning of the great toe.
