Most common causes of flat feet

Foot & ankle specialists

The fetal position that the newborn adopts as a result of having become accustomed to this state within the mother's womb can generate a predisposition to develop flat feet.

Genetic inheritance is one of the most common causes of flat feet; In addition, some conditions that are also hereditary, such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or Marfan syndrome, can cause loose tendons.

Some changes in the soft tissues due to the development and formation of the bones can cause flat feet. These alterations can retract the muscles and ligaments of the sole of the foot.

Over the years, injuries or traumas or certain types of diseases can damage the tendons and generate flat feet in people, even when the plantar arches were already formed. Also, this condition can occur in only one foot.

The coalition of the tarsus, that condition in which two or more bones of the foot grow together or fuse, can cause, on certain occasions, painful flat feet.
