How can I take care of an ingrown toenail?
Foot & ankle specialists
Ingrown toenails, when caught early, can be treated at home without having to go to the doctor. If you notice a slight pain in your finger and you see that the nail is starting to grow into or under the skin, you can relieve the pain and try to prevent infection. Try soaking your affected foot in warm salt water for 20 minutes at a time, 2-3 times a day to ease the pain. To give yourself a saltwater footbath, fill a bucket with clean, warm water or fill the bathtub to a height where you can submerge your entire foot. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt (which you can buy at a pharmacy or grocery store). Ordinary table salt works too, so use whatever you have around the house.
To prevent the nail from growing under the skin, try to relieve pressure by placing a dry cotton ball (such as cotton balls) under the corner of the nail that is just starting to grow under the skin. Put antibiotic cream on the irritated area twice a day; this can help prevent possible infections.
If it continues to hurt or the pain gets worse, call your doctor right away.
