What is an ingrown toenail and how do they happen in adolescence?

A nail becomes ingrown when one or both sides begin to grow into the adjacent skin. This can hurt and cause part of your finger to swell. Ingrown toenails can become infected due to all the bacteria on your feet and inside your shoes. Ingrown toenails usually affect the big toes.

How do nails get ingrown?

The most common cause of an ingrown toenail is cutting it too short. When a person cuts a nail too short, the skin on both sides of the nail can cover the corners of the nail. This causes the nail to grow into the skin, that is, under it, instead of on it. Nails that are chipped or cut round are also prone to ingrown because they do not have clear corners. When they grow, a corner is formed under the skin, which is as if it were buried in the meat.
