Do you know what a sprained ankle is?
Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments that support the ankle are overstretched and / or torn. An ankle sprain can occur from inadvertently sticking the foot into a hole, when an ankle twists to the side while walking or running, or simply misplacing the foot.
The most common type of ankle sprain is when the ankle is twisted in such a way that the sole of the foot points inward (toward the opposite foot). Ankle sprains are common, accounting for 25% of all sports-related injuries.
With rest and proper treatment, most ankle sprains heal within 4 to 6 weeks. But there are others that may take longer to heal.
What are the signs and symptoms of a sprained ankle?
The signs of an ankle sprain depend on how bad it is. Its most common symptoms include the following:
pain
sensitivity to pressure and touch
inflammation
Difficulty bearing weight on the affected foot or walking on that foot
bruising
