Pediatric Flatfoot: Non-surgical treatment

If a child has no symptoms, it often does not require treatment. Instead, the foot and ankle physician will periodically observe and reevaluate the condition.

In some cases of asymptomatic flat feet, the use of custom orthopedic devices may be considered.

When the child has symptoms, treatment is required. Your foot and ankle physician may recommend one or more of the following non-surgical treatment options:

-Modification of activities. The child needs to temporarily decrease activities that cause pain and avoid walking or standing for long periods of time.
-Orthopedic devices. The foot and ankle practitioner may recommend custom-fitted orthotics that are placed inside the shoe to support the structure of the foot and thus improve its functionality.
-Physical therapy. Stretching exercises, supervised by a foot and ankle physician or a physical therapist, provide relief in some cases of flat feet.
-Medication. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, can help reduce pain and inflammation.
-Modifications of footwear. Your foot and ankle doctor will advise you on shoe features that are important to keep in mind for children with flat feet.

When is surgery needed?

In some cases it is necessary to resort to surgery to relieve symptoms and improve the functionality of the feet. The surgical procedure or combination of procedures chosen for your child will depend on the particular type of flat foot she has and the degree of deformity.
