Pediatric Flatfoot: What is it?

Flatfoot is common in both children and adults. When this deformation occurs in children, it is called “pediatric flatfoot”. Although there are different forms of flat feet, they all share one characteristic; the partial or total fall of the arch of the foot.

Pediatric flatfoot can be classified as symptomatic or asymptomatic. Symptomatic flatfoot presents symptoms such as pain and limitation of activity, whereas asymptomatic flatfoot does not show symptoms. These classifications can help your foot and ankle physician determine an appropriate treatment plan.

Symptoms
Flatfoot can be detected at birth or it can present years later. Most children with flat feet have no symptoms, but some children have one or more of the following symptoms:

-Pain, tenderness, or cramps in the foot, leg, and knee
-Heel tilt out
-Stumbness or changes in the way you walk
-Difficulties with shoes
-Reduced energy when participating in physical activities
-Voluntary withdrawal from physical activities
