Ingrown nails, Self-care at home

If the person has a mild case of ingrown toenail and cannot go to the doctor, they can temporarily relieve the symptoms by doing the following:

-Soak the foot in hot water three to four times, keeping the foot completely dry the rest of the day.

-Massage gently on inflamed skin.

-Place a small piece of cotton or dental floss under the nail and wet the cotton with water or antiseptic.

If it is the first time, the person can try to slightly trim the nail. To do this, you will first need to briefly soak your foot in hot water to soften it and make sure you cut with a clean, sharp nail clipper. Being careful not to round or over-trim the corners, you will want to try to cut straight along the tip. Experts contraindicate that the patient touch the buried part of the nail.

In the event that the ingrown toenail worsens, the patient will have to go to a podiatrist or dermatologist.

When to go to the specialist?

You should go to a specialized podiatrist if you cannot cut your nail, have a very strong pain with redness and inflammation or if you have a fever ”, indicates Torralba Estellés and also underlines the special attention that diabetic patients require. “If you are diabetic and an ingrown toenail is self-detected, you should go immediately to a specialist podiatrist.
