Ingrown nails, what is it and some causes.

What is it
It occurs when the nail plate is buried in the sides of the skin of the toe causing pain, redness and in some cases even infection.

Causes
This condition can be the result of many factors. According to the expert in podiatry, the main causes include an inadequate cut of the nail, a too narrow shoe joint or a poor choice in shoe sizing. This extra pressure on the toe causes the skin along the edge of a toenail to become infected and turn red. The big toe is usually affected, but any toenail can become ingrown.

Another very common cause is when the toenails are not properly groomed, when they are too short or the edges are rounded instead of being trimmed straight. Physical disability, poor eyesight, or thick fingernails are some of the main reasons why someone might incorrectly trim their nails. Also, people who pick or tear the corners of their nails have a higher chance of developing an ingrown toenail.

On the other hand, there are people predisposed to suffer from this ailment at birth with curved nails that tend to grow down or having toenails that are too large for their fingers. Lastly, a crushed toe or other similar injuries can also cause the nail to ingrown.
