Tests and exams to diagnose athlete's foot
Your healthcare provider can diagnose athlete's foot simply by looking at the skin. If tests are needed, these may include:
-A simple in-office test called a potassium hydroxide (KOH) test to look for fungus
-Leather culture
-A skin biopsy can also be carried out with a special dye called PAS to identify the fungus
Expectations (prognosis)
Athlete's foot infections always respond well to treatment, although they can recur. The use of preventive measures and long-term medications may be required. The infection can spread to the toenails.
When to contact a medical professional
Call your provider right away if:
The foot is swollen and hot to the touch, especially if it has red lines or pain. These are signs of a possible bacterial infection. Other signs include pus, discharge, and fever.
-The symptoms of athlete's foot do not disappear after 2 to 4 weeks of self-care treatments.
