Treatment for athlete's foot

Over-the-counter antifungal creams or powders can help control the infection:

These products contain drugs such as miconazole, clotrimazole, terbinafine, or tolnaftate.
Keep using the medicine for 1 to 2 weeks after the infection is gone to prevent it from coming back.
Further:

Keep your feet clean and dry, especially between the toes.
Wash your feet well with soap and water, and thoroughly dry the area very carefully. Try to do this at least twice a day.

To widen and keep the interdigital space (the area between the toes) dry, use sheep's wool. This can be bought at the pharmacy.

Wear clean cotton socks. Change your socks, as well as your shoes, as often as necessary to keep your feet dry.

Wear sandals or flip flops in public pools or showers.

Use antifungal powders or drying powders to prevent athlete's foot if you tend to get it often or if you frequent places where the fungus that causes athlete's foot is common (such as public showers).

Wear shoes that are well ventilated and made from a natural material like leather. It can be helpful to alternate shoes each day, so that they can dry completely between one wear and the next. Do not wear shoes with plastic linings.

If athlete's foot does not improve with self-care treatment in 2 to 4 weeks or if it comes back frequently, see your provider. Your provider may prescribe:

Antifungal medications taken by mouth
Antibiotics to treat bacterial infections that occur from scratching
Topical prescription creams that kill fungus
