Heel pain, some causes

Most often, heel pain is the result of overuse. However, it can be caused by injury.

The heel may be swollen or tender from:

Footwear with insufficient support or cushioning

Running on hard surfaces like concrete

Running too often

Stiffness in the calf muscles or Achilles tendon

Sudden turning of your heel in or out

Landing violently or awkwardly on the heels

Conditions that can cause heel pain include:

Swelling and pain in the Achilles tendon

Swelling of the fluid-filled sac (bursa) at the back of the heel bone under the Achilles tendon (bursitis)

Bone spurs on the heel

Swelling of the thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot (plantar fasciitis)

Heel bone fracture associated with a very hard landing on the heel from a fall (calcaneal fracture)
