Always tell your healthcare provider what medications you are taking, including drugs, supplements, or herbs you have bought without a prescription.

During the week before surgery:

You may be asked to stop taking drugs that make it harder for your blood to clot, including aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin), and naproxen (Aleve and Naprosyn).

Ask your doctor which drugs you should still take on the day of surgery.

If you have diabetes, heart disease, or other conditions, your surgeon will ask you to see a doctor who treats you for these conditions.

Tell the provider if you have been drinking more than 1 or 2 glasses of alcohol a day.

If you smoke, try to stop. Ask the doctor for help. Smoking can slow bone consolidation and wound healing.
Tell the provider if you get a cold, flu, herpes outbreak, or any other illness before surgery.

On the day of surgery:

Follow the directions not to eat or drink before the procedure.

Take the drugs your doctor recommended with a small sip of water.

Get to the hospital on time.

After the procedure:

Most people go home the same day as bunion removal surgery.
