Foot fungus: Risk factors

The presence of some factors favors the nail infection by fungi. For example, patients with athlete's foot, which is a fungal infection of the skin of the toes, are at increased risk of developing fungal nail infection as well. Other risk factors are:

Mellitus diabetes.
Old age.
HIV.
Use of immunosuppressive drugs.
Immunological problems.
Family history of onychomycosis.
Psoriasis.
Blood circulation problems in the lower extremities.

Athletes are also a risk group for onychomycosis. These individuals are often with their feet frequently shod and sweaty by virtue of perspiration, in addition to presenting a higher incidence of trauma to the nail due to the impact of their physical activities.
