Neuritis Treatment, Causes, & Symptoms
Neuritis is an inflammation of nerves that can occur anywhere in the body. When this condition happens in the feet it can affect the heel, toes, and/or metatarsal (ball of the foot) area.
Neuritis Causes
Neuritis can have various possible causes that include injury, infection, damage to the blood vessels that supply the ailing nerve, or a vitamin deficiency. It can also be caused by a structural or functional issue causing added pressure or damage to the nerve.
Diabetes and complications that stem from it are the cause of neuropathy in about 30% of cases. Another 30% of cases are idiopathic and the cause is not known. The other approximately 40% of cases are caused by medical conditions, drugs, and toxins that are known to cause nerve damage. Some of the causes in these cases include:
- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
- Trauma.
- Fabry’s Disease.
- Chemotherapy and other medications.
- Alcoholism.
- Celiac Disease.
- Autoimmune Conditions (lupus, vasculitis, etc.)
Neuritis Symptoms
Symptoms of neuritis are that of nerve problems anywhere else in the body and can be numbness, tingling, and a burning “pins and needles” pain. Once neuritis is diagnosed, the treatments can include custom orthotics, diet changes, vitamin supplements, cortisone injections, or medications. The prescribed treatment depends on what the underlying cause of the condition is.
- Painful corns and calluses on the top and bottom of the toes or on the ball of the foot.
- Pain and pressure on the toes, foot, and joints.
- Toes bent upward at the joint at the base of the toe.
- Toes bent downward at the middle joint.
- Pain in the toes and ball of the foot because of the rubbing they experience inside a shoe.
Neuritis Treatment
Treating neuritis begins with determining exactly where your nerve pain is coming from. Once this is established, your Podiatrist will formulate a treatment plan that is appropriate. Various treatment options range from custom designed orthotics, diet changes/supplements, medication, and cortisone injections.
