At what age should I take my son to the Podiatrist?
Orlando H.Rivera DPM
Quite often patients who visit a podiatrist's office talk about their children because they have observed some pattern of walking or postural attitude that they consider is not normal or that it seems to them that it can harm them.
The question they usually ask, especially when children are young, is when is it necessary to perform a podiatric control?
In normal conditions from birth to 4 years of age it is normal to have a flat foot, this is due to the elasticity of the foot components at this stage of development correcting spontaneously. It is precisely from 4 years, the right time for them to make a review in consultation where they will perform a series of simple tests that determine the correct development of the foot or otherwise act to treat any alteration detected.
It is considered that the foot is fully formed at 9 years of age, however, its growth continues long after approximately 20 years of age. Logically as soon as structural problems are detected, better prognosis offers the treatments, in most conservative cases, and can even avoid aggressive treatments.
