Ankle Sprain: Symptoms and First Aid

Foot and Ankle

The ankle sprain is a ligament injury that occurs very frequently, accounting for 38% of the injuries to the locomotor system.

It is caused by a twisting of the foot, or by forcing the joint too much inward (outward) or outward (inversion), causing partial or total strain or tear of the ankle ligaments.

After the injury occurs, these are the usual signs and symptoms:

  • inflammation
  • rest pain
  • pain that prevents walking or standing on the foot
  • stiffness to movement
    bruising

If it happens to you, or someone close to you, it is important that you know the four steps that you must follow as first aid, while you can not go to a professional who diagnoses and values the injury:

1.- Immobilization and rest of the joint.

2.- Cryotherapy: apply cold in sessions of no more than 15 minutes every 4 or 6 hours. The application of cold is essential in the first 72 hours.

3.- Compression with a stocking or elastic bandage.

4.- Keep your foot up.

The subsequent diagnosis of ankle sprain should be made by a physician - preferably a traumatologist - after an examination, knowing how the injury has occurred and, occasionally, an x-ray. This will also assess the severity of the injury.

A sprain may be from grade I, the least severe, without ligament rupture, to grade III, in which there has been a complete rupture of the ligaments, generally of the peroneus-astragaline.
For Grade I sprains, a corrective functional dressing is usually sufficient, in addition to the first aid already indicated. In the case of grade II and III may need circulatory massage of edema and physical therapy exercises.

The risk of a new sprain is much greater during the year following having suffered one, so it is so important the correct healing and care and prevention in those 12 months.

To prevent a new sprain, it is important that you wear proper and tight footwear and warm up and stretch well before engaging in physical exercise or playing sports.
