Home care tips for heel pain
Foot & ankle specialists
The following measures can help relieve heel pain:
Use crutches to take weight off your feet.
Rest as much as possible for at least a week.
Apply ice to the area of pain. Do this at least twice a day for 10 to 15 minutes and more often in the first two days.
Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain.
Wear shoes with good support and that fit well.
Use heel cups, felt pad in the heel area, or a shoe insert.
Wear night splints.
Your healthcare provider may recommend other treatments, depending on the cause of your heel pain.
Keeping the muscles in your calves, ankles, and feet strong and flexible can help prevent certain types of heel pain. Always stretch and warm up before exercising.
Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with good arch support and cushioning. Make sure there is enough room for your fingers.
